Sharh al-Ajurrumiyya is Shaykh Khalid al-Azhari's celebrated commentary on al-Ajurrumiyya — the universal beginner's matn of Arabic grammar (nahw) composed by Abu Abd Allah Muhammad b. Da'ud al-Sanhaji (Ibn Ajurrum) in seventh-century AH Fez. The matn itself is a short prose tract of perhaps a dozen pages that establishes the foundational categories of Arabic grammar — the kalima, the noun, the verb, the particle, ifrad and tathniya, the marfuat, mansubat, and majrurat, the operators of nasb and jazm. Khalid al-Azhari's commentary explains each ruling for the beginning student, illustrates with examples, and clarifies the relations among the categories.

For more than seven centuries, the Ajurrumiyya has been the very first text placed in the hands of students of Arabic grammar across the Sunni world, and al-Azhari's commentary remains one of the most-used companions for it.

About The Author

Shaykh Khalid b. Abd Allah al-Azhari (838-905 AH / 1434-1499 CE) was an Egyptian master of Arabic grammar who taught at al-Azhar in the late Mamluk era. Beyond this commentary, his Hashiya on Ibn Aqil's Sharh al-Alfiyya is among the standard works on advanced Arabic grammar.

عن المؤلف

الشيخ خالد بن عبد الله الأزهري (٨٣٨-٩٠٥ هـ) إمامٌ في علم النحو، درّس بالأزهر في أواخر دولة المماليك. له بالإضافة إلى هذا الشرح حاشيةٌ على شرح ابن عقيل على الألفية، من المراجع المعتمدة في النحو المتقدّم.
