About
Muhammad b. Muhammad b. Ahmad al-Sanbawi al-Azhari al-Maliki (1154-1232 AH / 1742-1817 CE), known as al-Amir al-Kabir, rahimahullah, was the preeminent Maliki scholar at al-Azhar in his era and one of the most distinguished Egyptian masters of Ashari kalam in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. His works in Maliki fiqh and Ashari theology remain foundational late-Azhari references. His Hashiyat al-Amir ala Ithaf al-Murid bi-Jawharat al-Tawhid is a critical supercommentary on Burhan al-Din al-Laqqani's Ithaf al-Murid, which is itself a commentary on al-Laqqani's father's Jawharat al-Tawhid - a versified summation of Ashari doctrine that served as the primary kalam teaching text in the Azhari curriculum for four centuries. Al-Amir's hashiya adds precision and resolution to the open questions treated in the lower layers of the commentary tradition.
