About
Nizam al-Din al-Shashi was a scholar of Islamic jurisprudence hailing from the region of Transoxiana (Ma wara' al-Nahr), the historic heartland of Islamic learning east of the Oxus River. He is best known as the author of Usul al-Shashi, a concise and highly structured primer on the foundational principles of Islamic jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh). The work, sometimes called Kitab al-Khamsin in reference to a tradition about its composition, has remained a widely taught and studied text in traditional madrasas throughout the Muslim world for centuries. Despite the broad acceptance and ongoing study of his work, detailed biographical information about his life, teachers, students, and dates has not been reliably preserved in available sources.
