The book Usul ash-Shashi is an isagogic opuscule on legal theory according to the Hanafi School of Law. It is widely favoured and accepted in the darse niazmi syllabus of South Asian seminaries and their sister institutions outside of the Asian Subcontinent despite little being known of its author.
The translation will appeal to a wide readership in particular to elementary students of Islamic law and to those that are interested in legal theory.

Nizam Ad-Din Ash-Shashi: Nizam al-Din al-Shashi was a scholar of Islamic jurisprudence hailing from the region of Transoxiana (Ma wara' al-Nahr), the historic heartland of Islamic learning east of the Oxus River. He is best known as the author of Usul al-Shashi, a concise and highly structured primer on the foundational principles of Islamic jurisprudence (usul al-fiqh). The work, sometimes called Kitab al-Khamsin in reference to a tradition about its composition, has remained a widely taught and studied text in traditional madrasas throughout the Muslim world for centuries. Despite the broad acceptance and ongoing study of his work, detailed biographical information about his life, teachers, students, and dates has not been reliably preserved in available sources.
About the translator
Mansur Ali: Maulana Dr Mansur Ali hafidhahullah received his foundational Islamic education at Darul Uloom Bury in the United Kingdom and continued his studies at Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, where he trained in traditional Islamic sciences and Arabic. He subsequently pursued advanced academic work, completing a PhD in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Manchester. His doctoral thesis focused on the role of the isnad (chain of transmission) in the Sunan of Imam Tirmidhi, a significant contribution to the scholarly study of hadith methodology in a Western academic context. He currently serves as a lecturer in Arabic and Islamic Studies at Cardiff University and as Khatib at the Darul Isra Mosque in Cardiff, bridging traditional Islamic learning with contemporary academic scholarship. His translation of Usul Ash-Shashi, a classical Hanafi text on the principles of Islamic jurisprudence, reflects his grounding in both traditional and academic methodologies.
