Al-Adab al-Mufrad, an anthology of 1329 hadiths, is a treasured work in Muslim history by one of its most respected scholars, Imam Bukhari.
In preparing this selection of hadiths Imam Bukhari aimed to set out a model to follow for successful relations within the Muslim community as well as the interaction between Muslims and non-Muslims based on the Prophetic example, and that of Muhammad's closest companions. All of the hadiths are directly related to the standards of manners and morality Islam wants to prevail, and Muslims throughout the world have been guided by it since its preparation over a millennium ago.
Famed for the reliability and strength of his work, Imam Bukhari exclusively used hadith that do not go below the grade of "Good", or "Hasan", and since they are focused on manners and moral values, they are upheld by scholars.
What distinguishes the present work is that it includes a contemporary commentary, clearly emphasizing the relevance of the Prophet's teachings in our modern and complex societies. This pioneering addition marks it out as perhaps the first English work commenting on and explaining a full anthology of hadiths.
The translator and author of the commentaries, Adil Salahi, has a long history of research in the Seerah and Hadith, and he wrote extensively on both. This work puts together the best of his writings on the Prophet's teachings in the area of morality and private and social manners.

About the author
Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari: Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Juʿfi al-Bukhari (194-256 AH / 810-870 CE) was born in Bukhara, in present-day Uzbekistan, and stands among the greatest scholars of hadith in Islamic history. Losing his father in infancy, he was raised by his mother and began memorizing hadith as a boy, traveling for many years across Khurasan, Iraq, the Hijaz, Egypt, and Syria to hear and verify narrations from the leading teachers of his age. He became known by the lofty title Amir al-Muʾminin fi al-Hadith, the "commander of the faithful in hadith," for his unmatched command of the chains and defects of Prophetic reports. His masterwork, al-Jamiʿ al-Sahih al-Musnad, universally called Sahih al-Bukhari, was the fruit of decades of careful sifting and is considered by Sunni scholars the soundest collection of hadith and the most authoritative book after the Qurʾan itself. Among his other writings are al-Adab al-Mufrad, a treasured collection on Islamic manners and character, including its sections on dutifulness to parents (birr al-walidayn), and the monumental al-Tarikh al-Kabir, a biographical dictionary of hadith narrators. Late in life he settled in Naysabur, then, after disputes, withdrew to Khartank near Samarqand, where he died in 256 AH. His Sahih remains a cornerstone of Islamic learning, studied and commented upon in every generation since.
About the translator
Adil Salahi: Adil Salahi is a contemporary scholar, author, and translator whose work has helped bring the Islamic tradition to English-speaking readers. Trained in the classical sciences under teachers in Damascus, in the long-standing tradition of study and certification, he combined that grounding with a background in English literature. For many years he taught at the Markfield Institute of Higher Education in England. The greater part of his career was in broadcasting and print journalism. He worked with Syrian radio and the BBC Arabic Service, contributed to the Arabic daily al-Sharq al-Awsat, and for more than thirty years wrote the full-page column "Islam in Perspective" for the Saudi newspaper Arab News. As an author, Salahi is best known for Muhammad: Man and Prophet, a widely read life of the Prophet that has gone through many printings and appeared in several languages, and for the companion study Muhammad: His Character and Conduct, as well as Pioneers of Islamic Scholarship. His translations include Sayyid Qutb's eighteen-volume Qur'anic commentary Fi Zilal al-Qur'an (In the Shade of the Qur'an) and an English rendering of the Qur'an. His other writings range across hadith studies, Qur'anic sciences, and questions of family and society, reflecting a lifelong concern to explain Islam clearly to a modern audience.
