About The Book

Al-Basit fi al-Madhhab is Imam al-Ghazali's monumental condensation of his teacher al-Juwayni's Nihayat al-Matlab fi Dirayat al-Madhhab — itself the most exhaustive medieval exposition of Shafi'i jurisprudence, running to forty volumes. Where al-Juwayni wrote forty volumes, al-Ghazali compressed the substance into thirteen, then condensed those again into al-Wasit, al-Wajiz, and finally al-Khulasa — a descending sequence of condensations that became the foundational stratum of all later Shafi'i teaching. Every major Shafi'i work that followed — including al-Rafi'i's al-Sharh al-Kabir, and al-Nawawi's al-Rawda and Minhaj al-Talibin — traces its substantive lineage directly to this work.

This 13-volume critical edition runs to approximately 7,040 pages, with a full scholarly apparatus and indices, prepared under the supervision of Dr. Fatima al-Qasimi. The work is of particular interest because al-Ghazali composed it before his celebrated spiritual crisis and the writing of Ihya Ulum al-Din: the master jurist whose later turn to tasawwuf is so often the focus of his readers had first built, in al-Basit, a foundation of unmatched scholastic competence in fiqh.

About The Author

Imam Abu Hamid Muhammad b. Muhammad al-Ghazali (450–505 AH / 1058–1111 CE), Hujjat al-Islam — the Proof of Islam — is among the most influential thinkers in the history of Islam. Born in Tus in Khurasan, he studied under al-Juwayni at Nishapur and rose to teach at the Nizamiyya college in Baghdad, before withdrawing into a long spiritual retreat from which he emerged with the Ihya Ulum al-Din. His combination of mastery in fiqh, kalam, falsafa, and tasawwuf — and his willingness to subject each to scrutiny in the light of revealed knowledge — set the pattern for later Sunni intellectual life.

About The Editor

The present critical edition was prepared under the supervision of Dr. Fatima al-Qasimi, whose editorial team at the Ibn al-Arabi Foundation collated multiple manuscript witnesses, supplied scholarly introductions to each volume, and built comprehensive indices of Quranic verses, hadiths, named scholars, and technical terms.

About This Edition

Al-Basit fi al-Madhhab is an abridgement of Imam al-Haramayn al-Juwayni's Nihayat al-Matlab fi Dirayat al-Madhhab — the crown jewel and treasury of the Shafi'i school's literary heritage, the summation of al-Juwayni's entire scholarly career, and the distillation of his thought and intellect. The Nihaya is itself an abridgement and synthesis of the four fiqh works of Imam al-Shafi'i (may God be pleased with him) — al-Umm, al-Imla', Mukhtasar al-Buwaiti, and Mukhtasar al-Muzani — as well as a commentary on Mukhtasar al-Muzani. From this one understands that al-Basit by al-Ghazali, Hujjat al-Islam, is the distillation of the distillation of the Shafi'i school.

Al-Ghazali subsequently abridged al-Basit into al-Wasit, al-Wasit into al-Wajiz, and al-Wajiz into al-Khulasa — a chain of condensations that supplied the Shafi'i tradition with the working texts around which its great commentators built their scholarship.

The standing of al-Basit in the Shafi'i school becomes fully apparent when one considers that the two Imams Abu al-Qasim al-Rafi'i and Abu Zakariyya al-Nawawi — on whose analysis, verification, and composition the school settled its authoritative positions — were trained on al-Ghazali's books. Their commentaries and abridgements revolved entirely around his works and summaries, carrying al-Basit's substance into the very texts that Shafi'i students study to this day.

The Ibn al-Arabi Foundation for Research and Publishing presents this great work in thirteen volumes for readers, researchers, and students of Shafi'i fiqh in particular and Islamic jurisprudence in general. A team of the Foundation's researchers undertook the editorial preparation of the text and produced it in a presentation worthy of the work, under the supervision of Dr. Fatima al-Qasimi.
