The Hikam Ataiyya — 264 brief aphorisms on the inner life — is the foundational matn of the Shadhili way and one of the most-read texts in the entire history of Sufism. Composed by Imam Ibn Ata Allah al-Sakandari, the third great master of the Shadhili order, the Hikam compresses centuries of spiritual experience into single-sentence formulations of extraordinary precision: "Your striving for that which is already guaranteed to you, and your falling short in that which is demanded of you is evidence of the dimness of your insight." Each hikma is intended to be sat with, returned to, and let into the heart slowly.

The Hikam has generated a sustained commentary tradition stretching from Ibn Ibad al-Rondi in the eighth century to Ibn Ajiba in the thirteenth and beyond. Imam al-Subki famously remarked of the Hikam: "Were it permitted to recite anything in prayer other than the Quran, the Hikam would be that thing." Read across the Sunni world, translated into every major Muslim language, the Hikam remains the universal entry-point to the inner sciences of the Shadhili tradition.

About The Author

Imam Ahmad b. Muhammad Ibn Ata Allah al-Sakandari (658-709 AH / 1259-1309 CE) was the third great master of the Shadhili order after Abu al-Hasan al-Shadhili and Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi. A Maliki jurist who taught at al-Azhar, he gave the Shadhili teaching its first systematic written form in his Hikam, Lataif al-Minan, Miftah al-Falah, and Taj al-Arus.

"الحكم العطائية" — مائتان وأربع وستون حكمة قصيرة في الحياة الباطنة — هي متن الطريقة الشاذلية، وأحد أوسع نصوص التصوّف انتشاراً في التاريخ. صنّفها الإمامُ ابن عطاء الله السكندري، ثالثُ أئمّة الشاذلية. وتختصر كلُّ حكمةٍ منها قروناً من الخبرة الباطنة في صياغةٍ دقيقة: "اجتهادك فيما ضُمن لك، وتقصيرك فيما طُلب منك، دليلٌ على انطماس البصيرة منك". قال الإمامُ السُّبكي: "لو كان يجوز أن يصلّى بغير القرآن لصُلّي بالحكم".

عن المؤلف

الإمام أحمد بن محمد ابن عطاء الله السكندري (٦٥٨-٧٠٩ هـ) ثالث أئمّة الطريقة الشاذلية. فقيه مالكي درَّس بالأزهر، أوّل مَن دوَّن تعاليم الشاذلية في صياغة منهجية في "الحكم" و"لطائف المنن" و"مفتاح الفلاح" و"تاج العروس".
