About the author
Ibn Qudamah: Imam Ibn Qudamah rahimahullah (541-620 AH / 1146-1223 CE), whose full name is Abdullah ibn Muhammad ibn Qudama Abu Muhammad Muwaffaq al-Din al-Jama'ili al-Maqdisi, was born in the town of Jama'il in Nablus, Palestine. When he was eight years old, his family emigrated to Damascus after the Crusaders seized control of their homeland. He began his studies under his father, Shaikh Abu al-Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Qudama, learning the religious sciences and the texts of the Hanbali school including the Mukhtasar of al-Kharaqi. He then studied under various shaikhs of Damascus, and in 560-561 AH traveled to Baghdad for further study. At the outset of his career he briefly studied under Shaikh Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, at the time in his ninetieth year, where he studied the Mukhtasar of al-Kharaqi. He returned to Damascus, where he died in 620 AH / 1223 CE. His major works include the nine-volume al-Mughni in Hanbali jurisprudence, the al-Umda fi al-Fiqh, al-Wasiyya, as well as works in fundamentals of Sacred Law, tenets of faith, genealogy, biography, and Qur'anic exegesis.

Aisha Bewley: Aisha Bewley (b. 1948 CE) is one of the most prolific and respected translators of classical Arabic Islamic literature into English. Born in the United States, she earned a BA in French and an MA in Near Eastern languages at the University of California, Berkeley, and undertook further study at the American University in Cairo. She embraced Islam in 1968 and has since devoted more than four decades to rendering the texts of the Islamic tradition into clear, accessible English. Her best-known work is The Noble Qur'an, a translation of the meanings of the Qur'an produced with her husband, Abdalhaqq Bewley, and first published in 1999. Among her landmark translations are the Muwatta' of Imam Malik ibn Anas (1989), a foundational early collection of hadith and Maliki fiqh, and the multi-volume Tafsir of al-Qurtubi (2003 onward). Her wider output spans creed, law, and Prophetic biography, including abridgements and renderings of works such as Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya's writing on the soul after death and classical descriptions of the noble character and appearance of the Prophet, peace be upon him.
