Thetafsīrof al-Qurṭubī is perhaps one of the most compendious of them all and is certainly among the most famous. As its title,al-Jāmi‘ li Aḥkām al-Qur’ān– The General Judgments of the Qur’an, suggests, its main focus is on the rulings and judgments to be found in the Qur’ān. However, in the course of doing that, al-Qurṭubī examines all the relevant sciences necessary, such as theḥadīthpertaining to theāyahs, events in thesīrah,what the Companions, their Followers and other noted people of knowledge said about theāyahs, essential aspects of Arabic etymology, syntax and usage, copiously illustrated by examples, and much more.
This volume covers the commentary on Sūrat al-Anfāl, including the events of the first battle of Islam, the Battle of Badr and the topic arising from it, the division of the spoils of battle which alone were permitted to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, among the Messengers, which receives extensive treatment. It then proceeds to Sūrat at-Tawbah, among whose themes is the last expedition of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, against Rūm, which prefigured the work of the caliphs in theirjihādagainst Rūm and the Persians. That is followed by Sūrah Yūnus about the Prophet Yūnus who has sent to “a hundred thousand or more” who believed and affirmed, one of the most substantial events of its kind in history before our Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and the people of Madinah.

About the author
Abu Abdullah Muhammad al-Qurtubi: Al-Qurtubi (d. 671 AH / 1273 CE), in full Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Ansari al-Khazraji al-Qurtubi, was among the foremost Qurʾan commentators of the Muslim West. He was born in Cordoba in al-Andalus and trained there in the religious sciences, Maliki in law and Ashʿari in creed, with deep command of tafsir, hadith, the canonical readings (qiraʾat), and Arabic grammar. After the Christian conquest of Cordoba he migrated eastward, eventually settling at Munyat Ibn Khasib in Upper Egypt, where he passed his remaining years in worship, scholarship, and a noted disdain for worldly honors. His landmark work is al-Jamiʿ li-Ahkam al-Qurʾan, universally known as Tafsir al-Qurtubi, a vast commentary in some twenty volumes. Unlike commentaries crowded with narrative and history, al-Qurtubi concentrated on the legal rulings derived from the Qurʾan and how scholars inferred them, while also treating variant readings, grammar, and the science of abrogation (nasikh wa mansukh). It remains one of the most consulted classical tafsirs to this day. He is also remembered for al-Tadhkira fi ahwal al-mawta wa-umur al-akhira, an influential treatise on death, the grave, and the events of the hereafter, and is credited with a commentary on the Beautiful Names of God. He died and was buried in Egypt.

Aisha Bewley: Aisha Bewley (b. 1948 CE) is one of the most prolific and respected translators of classical Arabic Islamic literature into English. Born in the United States, she earned a BA in French and an MA in Near Eastern languages at the University of California, Berkeley, and undertook further study at the American University in Cairo. She embraced Islam in 1968 and has since devoted more than four decades to rendering the texts of the Islamic tradition into clear, accessible English. Her best-known work is The Noble Qur'an, a translation of the meanings of the Qur'an produced with her husband, Abdalhaqq Bewley, and first published in 1999. Among her landmark translations are the Muwatta' of Imam Malik ibn Anas (1989), a foundational early collection of hadith and Maliki fiqh, and the multi-volume Tafsir of al-Qurtubi (2003 onward). Her wider output spans creed, law, and Prophetic biography, including abridgements and renderings of works such as Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya's writing on the soul after death and classical descriptions of the noble character and appearance of the Prophet, peace be upon him. WorldCat records her as author or translator of dozens of works across many editions, and in 2023 she was named Muslim Woman of the Year by The Muslim 500, which recognizes the world's most influential Muslims.
