Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya: Muhammad ibn Abi Bakr ibn Ayyub, known as Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya (691-751 AH / 1292-1350 CE), was born near Damascus, where his father served as the attendant, or qayyim, of the al-Jawziyya school, the office that gave him his name. He studied the religious sciences in the city and, from around 712 AH, joined the circle of Ibn Taymiyya, becoming his closest disciple over roughly sixteen years. The two were persecuted together and imprisoned in the citadel of Damascus, and Ibn al-Qayyim went on to teach and write prolifically until his death in 751 AH. Hanbali in law, he ranged widely across Qurʾanic exegesis, hadith, legal theory, theology, and what would now be called spiritual psychology. His landmark Madarij al-Salikin is a vast commentary on the stations of the seeker; Zad al-Maʿad gathers the Prophet's guidance in worship and daily life; and al-Tibb al-Nabawi, his treatise on Prophetic medicine, remains widely read. Other works include Kitab al-Ruh on the soul, Uddat al-Sabirin on patience and gratitude, Miftah Dar al-Saʿada on knowledge, and Shifaʾ al-ʿAlil on divine wisdom and human destiny. He is remembered for joining disciplined legal reasoning to a heartfelt, often moving attention to the inner life of faith, and his writings continue to be read and translated across the Muslim world.

Aisha Bewley: Aisha Bewley (b. 1948 CE) is one of the most prolific and respected translators of classical Arabic Islamic literature into English. Born in the United States, she earned a BA in French and an MA in Near Eastern languages at the University of California, Berkeley, and undertook further study at the American University in Cairo. She embraced Islam in 1968 and has since devoted more than four decades to rendering the texts of the Islamic tradition into clear, accessible English. Her best-known work is The Noble Qur'an, a translation of the meanings of the Qur'an produced with her husband, Abdalhaqq Bewley, and first published in 1999. Among her landmark translations are the Muwatta' of Imam Malik ibn Anas (1989), a foundational early collection of hadith and Maliki fiqh, and the multi-volume Tafsir of al-Qurtubi (2003 onward). Her wider output spans creed, law, and Prophetic biography, including abridgements and renderings of works such as Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya's writing on the soul after death and classical descriptions of the noble character and appearance of the Prophet, peace be upon him. Layla Mabrouk: Layla Mabrouk is a contemporary Egyptian Islamic scholar whose writing focuses on the afterlife and the lives of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ. She is best known for her abridgement of the classical work Kitab al-Ruh by the medieval scholar Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyya (d. 751 AH), published by Dar al-Taqwa under the title The Soul's Journey After Death. Drawing on Qur'anic verses, hadith, and classical scholarship, the book traces the stages of the soul from the moment of death through to the Day of Judgment. She followed it with The Day of Rising, an independent companion volume on the events of the Last Day, covering the resurrection, the presentation of the record of deeds, the balance of deeds, the Sirat, the Basin of the Prophet ﷺ, and the entry into the Garden or the Fire.
