Etiquette of the Learner is an abridgement of Imam Badr al-Din Ibn Jama'ah al-Kinani's Tadhkirat al-Sami' wa-l-Mutakallim fi Adab al-'Alim wa-l-Muta'allim, a classical manual devoted entirely to the conduct that should accompany the pursuit of sacred knowledge. Its guiding premise is that etiquette precedes learning: before a student masters texts, he must first master the disposition with which he approaches them.

The work opens with a discussion of the virtue of knowledge and of scholars, and the merit of both teaching and learning it. It then turns to the etiquette of the scholar himself, addressing his personal conduct across a lengthy sequence of points, before moving to the etiquette a scholar must observe within his own teaching sessions. Together these sections offer a detailed, structured guide for aligning one's studies, and one's dealings with fellow students and teachers, with the standards of the Qur'an and Sunnah.

About the author

Ibn Jamaah: Imam Badr al-Din Ibrahim ibn Sa'd Allah ibn Jama'ah al-Kinani rahimahullah (639-733 AH / 1241-1333 CE) was a preeminent scholar of hadith, Islamic jurisprudence, and Qur'anic exegesis during the Mamluk era. Born in Hama in 639 AH/1241 CE, he rose to prominence as a distinguished Shafi'i jurist and served for many years in the judiciary, earning a reputation for virtuousness, praiseworthy conduct, and just rulings. His scholarly output was prolific and wide-ranging. Among his most important works are Al-Manhal al-Rawi (a work on hadith sciences), Al-Fawa'id al-La'i'ah min Surat al-Fatihah, Al-Tibyan li-Muhimmat al-Qur'an (on Qur'anic sciences), Al-Masalik fi 'Ulum al-Manasik (on Hajj rites), and Al-Najm al-Lami' fi Sharh Jam' al-Jawami' (a commentary on jurisprudence). He passed away in Cairo in 733 AH/1333 CE, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Islamic scholarship.

Shoaib Shah: Shoaib Shah is a British translator, editor, and author who has devoted his career to making classical Islamic scholarship accessible to contemporary English readers. He graduated from the seminary Jameʿah Uloomul Qurʾan and later earned a Master of Arts from the Markfield Institute of Higher Education. He went on to teach at his alma mater for roughly eighteen years, lecturing especially on the Qurʾanic sciences and tafsir. For around seventeen years he has worked editorially with Turath Publishing, contributing as translator, editor, or author to a long list of titles across the Islamic sciences. His translations include Ibn Jamaʿa al-Kinani's Etiquette of the Learner (an abridgement of the Tadhkirat al-Samiʿ wa al-Mutakallim), the treatise on the virtues and rulings of Salat al-Tasbih, and Life of the Grave, on the states of the deceased until the Resurrection. He served as editor on Softening the Heart, a rendering of Ibn al-Mubarak's Kitab al-Zuhd wa al-Raqaʾiq, and on Imam al-Ghazali's Book of Counsels, among many others. He has also produced devotional compilations such as Our Lord: Forty Rabbana, and authored short works on the life and character of the Prophet, including A Day in the Life of the Beloved. His output reflects a steady commitment to careful, readable renderings of the tradition.
